Device Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How does the MacBook Neo compare to the old Chromebooks?

In our internal testing, the MacBook Neo significantly outperformed our Chromebooks. The Apple silicon processors are highly efficient, handle multitasking better than ChromeOS devices, and offer exceptional battery life which easily lasts a full school day on a single charge.

What is the life expectancy of this device?

Apple typically provides software and security updates for 6-7 years. This ensures the device will be fully supported throughout all four years of high school and remain a high-functioning, secure device for at least three years after graduation.

What happens if the battery starts to die after a few years?

While all batteries degrade over time, the MacBook Neo is designed with efficiency in mind. Additionally, early indicators suggest these devices may be more “user-repairable” than previous models, meaning common parts like batteries could be easily serviced by our tech team or Apple-certified technicians using readily available parts.

Why the MacBook Neo instead of a MacBook Air?

We specifically chose the Neo to keep the program financially reachable for all families. The Neo provides the power of an M1-equivalent processor at a price point that allowed us to set the annual lease at $165, making it more affordable than a standard MacBook Air program.

Will certain apps or websites (like iMessage) be blocked on the MacBook?

Yes. The laptops are managed by the district and will have restrictions in place. Students will be required to use a new school-managed Apple ID tied to their school email address. Additionally, filtering software (Linewize/Qustodio) will remain active on the devices to filter content both at home and at school.

How will the laptops be wiped and removed from school software after graduation?

While the exact technical workflow is still being finalized, the process will look very similar to our current senior Chromebook collection during Cap & Gown pickup. Once final program payments are confirmed, the Technology team will assist students with removing the school’s management software and resetting the device so it belongs entirely to the student.

Are any other accessories (like a mouse or case) included?

The laptops come with standard Apple box contents, which include the Neo laptop, USB-C Charge Cable, and power block. No additional accessories are included. However, the Technology Office plans to offer cases, extra cords, and adapters for purchase through EFunds in the near future.

What happens if the MacBook Neo is accidentally damaged or needs repair?

If your MacBook Neo is accidentally damaged or needs repair, you must bring it to the DHS Library Technology office. Do not attempt to repair it yourself.

  • AppleCare+ Coverage: The included AppleCare+ covers up to two accidental damage incidents per 12 months (like drops and spills).
  • What is NOT covered: AppleCare+ does not cover cosmetic damage/normal wear and tear, lost or stolen laptops, damage from reckless/abusive conduct, fire/floods, or “excessive or catastrophic” physical or liquid damage (like being crushed, bent, or completely submerged in liquid). The final decision on what is covered is up to Apple’s discretion.
  • Loaners: If the repair is covered under AppleCare+, the student will receive a loaner laptop to use while theirs is being fixed.
