Health and Nursing Services
Danvers School Nurses are Registered Nurses certified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Today’s school nurse is an integral partner in each student’s educational team.
In addition to providing direct health services and nursing care in the office, school nurses are instrumental in identifying trends that impact student health and promoting wellness in areas that affect academic success. DPS nurses are available during school hours for direct care services, case management, and confidential consultations.

When to Keep Your Child Home
Please keep your child home from school when any of the following symptoms are present:
- Fever: Temperature of 100.4°F or greater within the past 24 hours.
- GI Symptoms: Vomiting or diarrhea occurring within the past 24 hours.
- Contagious Infections: Any untreated contagious infection. (Strep infections must be treated with antibiotics for a full 24 hours before returning to school. Ask your physician when your child is no longer contagious).
- Head Lice: Untreated head lice.
- Unexplained Pain: Complaints of severe or persistent earaches, toothaches, abdominal pain, or severe headaches should be formally evaluated by a healthcare professional.
When to Contact the School Nurse
Please help us provide the best care for your child by informing the nurse if your student experiences any of the following:
- A new diagnosis or general change in health status
- New medications or changes to existing medications
- A serious illness, major injury, or hospitalization
- Fractures, sprains, casts, or sutures
- Diagnosis of a concussion
- Diagnosis of a contagious disease (e.g., strep throat, pertussis, chickenpox)
- A new or life-threatening allergy
- Significant family changes or life events that may impact the student during the school day
Parent & Guardian Checklist
- Update Phone Numbers: Ensure primary contact numbers are current in your child’s school record so the nurse can reach you in an emergency.
- Report Absences: Promptly notify the main office if your child is going to be absent or tardy.
Tylenol (Acetaminophen) Administration Policy
Danvers Public Schools has adopted a policy regarding the administration of Tylenol (*acetaminophen) during the school day. Following a careful assessment by the school nurse, this policy allows acetaminophen to be administered for mild pain or fever should the need arise.
Each school provides a stock supply of acetaminophen, which is safely stored inside the Health Office.
Mandatory Requirements for Administration
Medication will not be administered unless the following complete requirements are met and on file:

Written Parent Authorization:
A completed and signed authorization form must be updated annually. This form must be submitted through your PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you experience any login issues, feel free to email support@danvers.org for assistance. -
Direct Verbal Confirmation:
For each individual occasion a child requires Tylenol, the School Nurse must speak directly with a parent/guardian prior to administration.
Important Policy Guidelines
- Updated Contacts: It is imperative that parents/guardians maintain accurate, up-to-date phone numbers with the school.
- Licensed Staff Only: As with all medications, Tylenol may only be administered directly by the School Nurse.
- Field Trips: Tylenol will NOT be sent or administered on field trips.
- Scope: Please note that this specific phone-call protocol applies strictly to Tylenol (*acetaminophen).
